A so-called ‘empty leg’ (empty flight) arises from existing bookings.
However, these empty flights are subject to constant change depending on the booking situation.
Example: A customer has booked a private jet for a flight from Lisbon to Frankfurt.
The aircraft’s home airport is Frankfurt. Provided there are no other bookings for the aircraft at the time of the enquiry, it would
position itself ‘empty’ – that is, without passengers – to Lisbon in order to fly the customer from Frankfurt to Lisbon.
The empty leg would therefore be from Frankfurt to Lisbon. This can be sold at a significantly better price than would normally be the case.
Rather than flying without passengers, airlines endeavour to offer this flight at a much lower price in order to generate additional income.
In some cases, discounts of more than 30 per cent are possible.
A light jet from Frankfurt to Mallorca normally costs around €14,000. As an empty leg passenger, you can fly from €4,500 – with the same level of comfort.
