Air ambulance

Luftrettung

One challenging task we are sometimes called upon to undertake is air rescue.

Air ambulance missions differ significantly from regular jet flights due to their specific nature.

Firstly, we need to know the exact diagnosis and flight requirements; for example, the patient may sometimes require oxygen or other medical assistance.

We require flight authorisation from the hospital of departure, and the receiving party must also confirm that the passenger will be received and transported to the destination.

As a rule, air ambulance jets are not capable of covering long distances non-stop. A long flight will most likely require a refuelling stop, and we must assess whether this is reasonable for the patient given the changes in pressure during take-off and landing.

Another question is who will accompany the patient. Sometimes an accompanying person is permitted on board. However, there is always a paramedic on board the jet to intervene in an emergency.

These and other questions must be discussed when preparing for an air ambulance flight.
